What to Wear for Newborn Photos: A Photographer’s Guide

One of the most common questions I’m asked before a session is: “What should we wear for our newborn photoshoot?” And I get it—choosing outfits for your family or newborn shoot can feel like a lot of pressure. You want everyone to look good, feel comfortable, and reflect who you are.

But here’s the good news: you don’t need matching outfits or a Pinterest-perfect wardrobe. For timeless, natural photography, simple is best. In this guide, I’ll share what works best for maternity, newborn, and family photos—based on years of working with real families just like yours here in Sydney.

Keep It Simple and Neutral

Soft, neutral tones always photograph beautifully. Think creams, whites, oatmeal, taupe, soft pinks, dusty blues, olive greens, and warm browns. These tones not only complement natural light, but also keep the focus on you and your connection, not your clothing.

Avoid loud patterns, logos, or neon colours—they tend to distract and date your images quickly. Instead, opt for textures (like linen, cotton, or knitwear) that add visual interest while still feeling timeless.

Dress for Comfort and Connection

Your session is all about real moments. That means you should feel like yourself—comfortable, relaxed, and able to move freely. Choose clothing you can sit in, cuddle in, or walk along the beach in.

For newborn sessions, go barefoot at home. Loose, flowy dresses or soft button-down shirts are perfect for parents. Baby can be wrapped in a muslin or in a simple onesie—nothing tight or scratchy needed. If siblings are involved, keep their outfits simple too (and avoid anything they might find itchy or uncomfortable).

Coordinate—Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing jeans and white shirts. Instead, aim to coordinate without being identical. Stick to a complementary colour palette across everyone’s outfits. If one person is wearing a patterned item, keep the rest of the family in solids or soft textures that pick up colours from that pattern.

Lay everything out on a bed and see how it looks together. Does it feel balanced? Is anything too bold or out of place? A quick iPhone photo can help you decide!

Consider the Location and Season

Is your shoot happening at home, at the beach, or in the bush? Your wardrobe should reflect the setting. For example:

At home (indoor newborn session): Soft knits, cardigans, comfy loungewear, bare feet.
Beach (sunset family shoot): Flowy dresses, linen shirts, rolled up pants, barefoot.
Bushland or park: Earthy tones, layers, boots or sandals depending on the season.
Light plays a huge role too—early morning and golden hour light pairs beautifully with soft, light-coloured clothing.

Make It Personal

This session is about your story. If you love vintage dresses, wear one. If you feel best in jeans and a cozy jumper, go for it. A newborn shoot isn’t the time for stiff outfits or Pinterest pressure—it’s about preserving the emotion and beauty of your real life, as it is right now.

Bonus: What to Bring

A change of clothes for little ones (accidents happen!)
Swaddles or a favourite blanket for your newborn
Snacks for toddlers (bribery is welcome!)
Any sentimental pieces you want included (like grandma’s blanket or a special toy)
